Chelsea Speer of Spencer, NY, a Coast Guard veteran who served in Louisiana, was the Ziff Law Firm’s first Veteran of the Game when the Elmira Enforcers professional hockey team opened its 2021 season on Friday. Feb. 19, at First Arena in downtown Elmira.
There were no fans in the stands during the game because of the pandemic, but the public address announcer saluted Chelsea so fans watching the game on the Enforcers’ YouTube channel could honor the former second class petty officer while watching at home.
The Enforcers beat the Port Huron Prowlers 10-0 on opening night.
Chelsea enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 2009 and left active duty in 2016 to pursue a career as a professional paralegal in Louisiana. In 2020, she moved to New York State to work as a paralegal for the Ziff Law Firm.
While in the Coast Guard, Chelsea spent three years managing oil spill responses in the navigable waterways of Louisiana. She was also president of the Coast Guard Enlisted Association, a volunteer organization that supports enlisted members who are suffering through, or have suffered through, hardships and tragedies through fundraisers and general support.
For her service, Chelsea was awarded the following:
- Two Good Conduct Medals.
- Two Coast Guard Meritorious Team Commendations.
- A Coast Guard Pistol Marksmanship Ribbon.
- A Coast Guard Achievement Medal.
- A National Defense Service Medal.
The Ziff Law Firm thanks Chelsea for her service to our country,

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
Once a veteran or active-duty member is nominated, the program coordinator contacts the nominator and schedules the veteran’s night to be honored. Those making nominations may request certain games and we will do our best to accommodate all requests. One veteran is honored at each game.
During the game, the public-address announcer will introduce the honored veteran or active-duty service member and read a short biography of their military service. When fans return to First Arena, the announcer will encourage a round of applause for the honored military member, who receives four free tickets for the game. Hockey fans always let out a big cheer for the veterans.
See the Enforcers’ schedule here.
