I just read an excellent blog post about lawyers who do not carry legal malpractice insurance. Frankly, I think it should be malpractice to NOT carry malpractice insurance.

Unfortunately, in New York and Pennsylvania where I practice, malpractice insurance for lawyers is not required. So some lawyers try to save money and go without insurance. I think this is horrible and leaves the clients of these lawyers in a very vulnerable position. All of the lawyers at the Ziff Law Firm are covered by legal malpractice insurance.

Let’s face it, no lawyer wants to commit malpractice, but sadly, mistakes can happen in any organization, so it is important that every lawyer have insurance in the event that some mistake results in harm to the client. That’s when malpractice insurance steps in to make things right. But if there is no insurance, the injured client might be totally out of luck.

Just like doctors who go without insurance, or bar owners or businesses or the many other places or professions where insurance is not required, lawyers without insurance is a bad thing because it takes away a very significant client protection.

So, residents of Elmira, Corning and the Twin Tiers, if you are in need of an injury lawyer (or any attorney for that matter), be sure to confirm that they have legal malpractice insurance.

Hopefully you will never need that coverage but if you do, it can make all the difference in the world.

Thanks, Jim
