If you’ve been watching or reading local news recently, you’ll know that Elmira has seen THREE fatalities caused by careless driving – two pedestrians and a skateboarder – within a few weeks.

I recently wrote about this spate of tragedies and the most recent victim in a post, “Victim in Fatal Elmira Pedestrian Accident Is Identified” here on the NY Injury Law Blog.

And I talked about local lawmakers’ ridiculous reaction in a recent segment of WETM-TV’s Law Talk,  Ziff Law’s weekly segment on our area news station.

What I said in the most recent video segment, “Skateboard/Pedestrian Laws” (it’s embedded in this post) was just my honest reaction to a “solution” proposed by some Elmira City Councilpersons. They thought t it would be a good idea to require licensing and insuring of skateboarders, bicyclists, pedestrians, motorized wheelchairs and baby strollers.

Talk about idiocy! This is a classic example of blame the victim. The skateboarder (like the other two pedestrians) was well within his rights to use the road and rather than focusing on the conduct of the innocent victims, why aren’t the politicians focusing on the careless drivers?

Thanks for reading – and watching,

Jim
