Services & Fees
What follows is a general discussion of the three main types of fees charged by most law firms including the Ziff Law Firm. But before even getting to that discussion, we want to make ONE IMPORTANT POINT– If you have ANY questions or concerns regarding the fees or expenses on your case, PLEASE ask the attorney representing you for an explanation. Please do NOT be embarrassed to discuss fees as we want to make sure that all of our clients fully understand the fees being charged. We truly believe that the reason we have had so few fee issues over the many years we have represented thousands of clients, is because we encourage clear communication about the fees from the very beginning of our representation of you. So, please, don’t hesitate to ask should you have any questions.
THERE ARE THREE MAIN TYPES OF FEES CHARGED BY MOST LAW FIRM (1) CONTINGENT FEES
(2) HOURLY FEES
(3) FLAT FEES
CONTINGENT FEES
This is a fee that is based upon a percentage (usually 1/3rd or 33%) of the amount recovered in the case. Contingent fees are usually used in personal injury and malpractice cases. More specific information regarding fees and disbursements on particular kinds of contingency cases can be found on our Frequently Asked Questions and Contingency Fee pages.
HOURLY FEES
This is a fee that is based upon a flat hourly rate charged by the attorney who is representing you. Under this arrangement, the more hours the attorney works on your case, the more it costs. Your attorney will explain his/her hourly rate as well as the rates of any other staff that might work on your case. Case disbursements are charged in addition to the hourly fee.
FLAT FEES
This is a fee that is determined at the beginning of the case and the attorney agrees to handle your legal matter for that flat fee. Case disbursements are charged in addition to the flat fee.
Please appreciate that this is a VERY basic explanation of the various fee types and that often fees may depart from these basic types. The key is for you to discuss the fee in your case and make absolutely certain you have no confusion about the fee arrangements. Like many things in life, communication is the key to good relations.….
