As a long time power boater, sailor, canoeist former Camp Seneca Waterfront and Camp Director and member of Seneca Chapter of USPS, I am said to see that it takes a law to make people pay attention to the obvious: a life jacket doesn’t work if you don’t wear it.

As a closet libertarian it is upsetting to me that we are not allowed to make the choice to risk our own lives by engaging in outdoor activity in whatever way we deem enjoyable. (We used to hike the local State Park Glens in the winter until some people inconvenienced the system by drowning or dying while doing what they wanted to do.)

But as a human being I realize that people don’t always do the right or smart thing – so we need the laws to save lives.

Surely the laws will make criminals of us all (was that Ben Franklin who said that?).
